Microsoft Office Mac Requirements

Office 2019 (for both Windows and Mac) is a one-time purchase and does not receive feature updates after you purchase it. Office 2019 includes a meaningful subset of features that are found in Office 365, but it's not part of Office 365. Here is important information on our technical requirements and support. Office 2011 for Mac: Antivirus Software: Required for on campus students. Strongly recommended for online students. Microsoft® Office 365 Pro Plus is available free of charge to all SNHU students and faculty. The Office suite will remain free while you are enrolled. . Specific courses or programs may have additional requirements as noted in both the course syllabus. Mobile devices can also be used with Capella sites and courses but it is required to have a computer with full operating system like Windows or Mac to ensure access to all sites, tools, and resources used by Capella and Capella courses.

Requirements

To use Office for Mac 2016, you must have:

  • Mac OS X 10.10 or later

  • One of the following subscriptions:

    • Office 365 Enterprise E3

    • Office 365 Business

    • Office 365 Business Premium

    • Office 365 ProPlus

    • Office 365 ProPlus for Students

    • Office 365 ProPlus for Faculty

    • Office 365 Midsize Business

    • Office 365 Small Business Premium

Note: Office 2016 for Mac for Office 365 operated by 21Vianet is not offered through the Apple store.

Download and install Office 2016 for Mac

  1. From your Mac, sign in to Office 365 operated by 21Vianet with your work or school account.

  2. Go to Settings > Office 365 Settings > Software.

  3. On the Software page, under Install Office 2016 for Mac, select Install to begin downloading the installer package.

  4. Once the download has completed, open Finder, go to Downloads, and double-click Microsoft_Office_2016_Installer.pkg.

  5. On the first installation screen, select Continue to begin the installation process.

  6. Enter your Mac login password to complete the installation.

After Office 2016 for Mac is installed, Word 2016 for Mac opens so you can activate Office and confirm your subscription. You should only have to do this once.

  1. Review the Word 2016 for Mac What's New screen, and then select Get started.

  2. On the Sign in to Activate Office screen, select Sign In, and then enter your work or school account.

  3. After you sign in, you may see an alert asking for permission to access the Microsoft identity stored in your keychain. Select Allow or Always Allow to continue.

  4. On the next screen, choose an appearance for your Office installation, select Continue, and then select the Start Using Word button to open the app and complete the Office 2016 for Mac activation.

  • The optional Blur my background video effect requires a processor with Advanced Vector Extensions 2 (AVX2) support. See Hardware decoder and encoder driver recommendations for a list of unsupported decoders and encoders.
  • Joining a meeting using proximity detection in a Microsoft Teams Room requires Bluetooth LE, which requires Bluetooth to be enabled on the client device, and for Windows clients requires the 64-bit Teams client. It's not available on 32-bit Teams clients.
Teams live eventsIf you are producing a Teams live events, we recommend using a computer that has a Core i5 Kaby Lake processor, 4.0 GB RAM (or higher) and hardware encoder. See Hardware decoder and encoder driver recommendations for a list of unsupported decoders and encoders.

  • Android: Compatible with Android phones and tablets.

    Support is limited to the last four major versions of Android. When a new major version of Android is released, the new version and the previous three versions are officially supported.

  • iOS: Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

    Support is limited to the two most recent major versions of iOS. When a new major version of iOS is released, the new version of iOS and the previous version are officially supported.

For the best experience with Teams, use the latest version of iOS and Android.
