It's different from highlighting text, which has a very limited choice of colors, and doesn't update when you switch to another theme. Select the word or paragraph that you want to apply shading to. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Shading.
Choose the Options command from the File tab’s menu.
The Word Options window will appear.
Choose Advanced from the list on the left side of the Word Options window.
You will see several Editing Options appear.
Under the Editing Options heading, remove the check mark by the item labeled When Selecting Automatically Select Entire Word.
